The short version
Four things, and every one of them is here to make the site work rather than to watch you. Two cookies keep you signed in and keep your forms safe to submit. Two entries in your browser’s own storage remember a choice you made and hold a half-finished trip plan, and neither ever leaves your device.
There are no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies, and no third-party scripts on any page.
Why there is no banner
Storage that is strictly necessary to provide something you asked for does not need consent, under regulation 6(4) of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. Everything on this page is in that class, so there is nothing here you could turn off and still sign in.
A button asking you to accept storage you cannot decline would not be a choice, and we would rather tell you exactly what is stored. What the law does ask for in this case is this page. If we ever add anything that is not strictly necessary, you will be asked first, and it will not be set until you say yes.
Everything we store
| Name | Type | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| __Host-otr_session | Cookie | Holds your session, so the site knows which trips and saved places are yours from one page to the next.HttpOnly, so no script on the page can read it, Secure, so it never travels over plain http, and SameSite=Lax, so another site cannot make your browser send it. | 30 days for a guest, 14 days once you have signed in. Renewed daily while you use the site. |
| otr_csrf | Cookie | Carries a token that proves a form submission came from a page of ours rather than from another site acting as you.Readable by our own page scripts by design, because they have to send it back in a header. It grants no access on its own. | The same as your session. |
| otr-theme | Local storage | Remembers whether you chose light, dark or your system setting.Set only when you use the theme switch, and never leaves your device. | Until you clear your browser data. |
| otr.planner.v1 | Session storage | Keeps a half-finished trip plan while you are filling it in, so reloading the page does not lose your answers.Never leaves your device. | Until you close the tab, or immediately when the trip is created. |
Every entry above is strictly necessary. Nothing on this site is set for analytics, advertising or profiling by anyone else.
Getting rid of them
Every browser lets you clear cookies and site data, usually under privacy settings, and doing so for this site signs you out and forgets your theme. Blocking them entirely also works: you will not be able to sign in, because the session cookie is how signing in is done at all.
Map tiles are fetched by your browser directly from the tile host, which is the one request on any page that goes somewhere other than us. It sets nothing on your device.
More
What we collect, who sees it and how to get it back or get rid of it is in the privacy notice.
